It is an honor to represent our departments, and we serve with enthusiasm. Freshmen Leadership Engineering Group

The Freshmen Leadership Engineering Group (FLEG) was formed in 2006 to meet the needs of freshmen desiring a high level of involvement within the College of Engineering. Leaders in the College teach these students the basics of holding positions, balancing academic performance with extracurricular activities, and working together to plan events.

FLEG has ties to both Engineering Ambassadors and the Benton Engineering Council. Engineering Ambassadors has provided FLEG with an abundance of knowledge and assistance in event planning, the Career Showcase, and internship possibilities. They have also given FLEG members the opportunity to perform Engineer's Week tours and practice leadership skills. BEC has supplied FLEG with immeasurable connections to different organizations in the College and also with the opportunity to assist on planning committees for different events such as Engineer's Week.

Bi-weekly meetings help to prepare these involved freshmen for what they will encounter when dealing with the professional world, including "1-minute Interview" techniques and resume preparation. They also introduce the members to different leaders in the College of Engineering by having elected representatives from various engineering organizations come speak and share their knowledge.

The East Hall event, planned and held in the fall semester, is organized entirely by FLEG. Their goal is to advertise, plan, and execute an event that will target others in their same academic year and serve to boost the freshmen engineering retention rate. The event caters to less involved freshmen that want to know about the resources that the College of Engineering has available to them. In the past, the event has consisted of team building activities, presentations from various college leaders, and information on tutoring and study help. Armed with the knowledge above, it is the opinion of FLEG that the participating freshmen will be less likely to change their majors.

In the first two years since this program's inception, "graduates" have gone on to hold internships at General Electric, CDM, Dow, CH2M Hill, Siemens and many other prestigious companies. Many also hold executive positions in organizations such as Engineering Ambassadors, Society of Women Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers, Engineers without Borders, Step Up, as well as events like Engineering Day.

"Engineering Future Leaders" has become a trademark for the organization. The initial achievements of this group will be developed by future members with the same aptitude for leadership. As this organization continues to grow and thrive, fostered by the Benton Engineering Council and Engineering Ambassadors, stronger, more imaginative and committed leaders will emanate from the College of Engineering.
